Sheila’s weekly update 76: In the sink . . .
It might be the Jubilee weekend but my mind is more on my new studio space, which has a very exciting feature – a dedicated brush washing sink! It might not sound like much, but it makes a huge difference!

Story Time
Are you sitting comfortably? Then let me begin . . . My head is full of stories, from myths, from fiction, from life, all swirling together. Narrative is just as important to visual works as written ones. This week I share some of the stories that influence some of my making, and hopefully allow you to see where some of the narratives in my work come from.

Sheila’s weekly update 75: Dealing with the “f” word
How do you feel about the “f” word? Failure, it’s hard isn’t it and we are so often our harshest critics. This week was a bit up and down for me. I know not getting accepted for things is part and parcel of being an artist. And I know that most decisions are totally subjective, and not a personal attack on me .Still, when you don’t get accepted it can be hard, and that’s when self doubt can creep in. However, despite getting a couple of “thanks, but no thanks” this week I did find inspiration from an unexpected opportunity to hear the amazing Bernadine Evaristo talking about her life…

Sheila’s weekly update 74: I’m back
So after a couple of weeks down time after my solo exhibition, I’m back! The exhibition was amazing but tiring. But I’m now refreshed and back sharing a wee update about where I’ve been and where I’m going. Excited about a move to a new studio space and plans for new work.

Stories from the exhibition
Whilst the rest of the art worlds attention was focused on Venice and its Biennale, in a small part of the West End of Glasgow there was another smaller scale but to me just as huge event. I finally did it! I had my own solo exhibition at Nicolls Gallery. What an experience! I’m still recovering and reflecting on it all. I know I normally do video updates here, but as part of my reflections I felt I actually wanted to write a short post and share some of the digital resources I created for the exhibition. When I booked the space I didn’t quite know exactly what I was…

Sheila’s weekly update 73: Getting ready . . .
This week has been a bit of a flurry preparing for my first solo exhibition in 2 weeks time on 22 April. So many decisions to make, so many things to sort out . . .

Sheila’s weekly update 72: Back to business and some essential reading
This week I am still enjoying the afterglow of my residency at Cove Park. I’ve been back in the studio working on some bigger pieces. I’ve also just got my copy of Scottish Women Artists by Charlotte Rostek (available via The Scottish Gallery). A wonderful little volume celebration the work of sadly often overlooked Scottish women artists.

Sheila’s weekly update 71: Colour, conversations and Cove Park
This week I have been on a residency at Cove Park. What a week I have had, enjoying the magical space in and around the Park and meeting and getting to know the other artists there. It really was a wonderful experience and I really enjoyed have both the physical and mental space that the Park offers. It truly was a restorative experience and one i hope to repeat.

Sheila’s weekly update 70: celebrating all the women, and new spaces
This week we celebrated International Womens Day. I am so thankful for all the women who have, and continue to support me in my work and life. Over the last couple of years, I’ve also really enjoying getting to know so many fantastic women artists – so this week I’m taking a bit of time to celebrate that. I also got the keys to a new studio space – how exciting.

Sheila’s weekly update 69: Solidarity and hope
This week everything is dominated by the terrible events in Ukraine, so I share some of my thought of helplessness about that, and a few other brighter notes about some exhibitions my work is in this month, you get more info here. Just now more than ever we need to be kind, to support our fellow human beings and look after each other. Art can help bring us together, to reflect , critique and find solace and hope.
