Sheila’s weekly update 86: open studio weekend
I’ve been having a busy couple of weeks and so didn’t quite manage to get an update done last week. However, normal service resuming today! This weekend, as part of the Glasgow Doors Open Festival, our studio space is open to visitors. I’m quite excited about people coming to see the whole space as well as my little corner of it. If you are coming along we are in the Dornoch Street Studios, G40 2QT (nearest train station is Bridgeton). Saltpace is quite active over the festival, not only are our studios open, but we also have our annual members show running over the weekend too. In Finite Worlds, features…

Sheila’s weekly update 84: back from holidays and finding inspiration and joy
After a couple of weeks off I’m back with my weekly updates. This week I share some thoughts on the John Byrne – A big adventure exhibition I visited at Kelvingrove At Gallery and Museum – wonderful to see so much of his work. Also realise that my top matches the colours of the drawers in my storage unit – totally unplanned matchy matchy!

Sheila’s weekly update 83: Experimenting with botanical printing
This weekend I had the most inspiring time at a botanical printing course. So this week I’m sharing some of the results of that and some emerging thoughts for future week. I’m off on holiday for a couple of week so no weekly updates for a couple of weeks. Huge thanks to Elizabeth Culshaw for her excellent workshop.

Sheila’s weekly update 81: A wee day oot!
Sometimes all you need is a day away. I had a lovely day this week visiting Lower Largo in Fife and exploring their Arts Week. So many artists and makers sharing their work and inviting people into their homes, studios and gardens.

Sheila’s weekly update 80: The big edit!
So moving on from last week’s update, I took some this week to sort out all those life- drawings. I took then to the studio, sorted them into years, and started putting them on the wall. That was good – but I had a bit of a masking tape fail and really didn’t have enough wall space! Luckily there are some long and wide corridors which I could use to spread out drawings by year. So this week I share a bit more about my reflections on that editing process and what it might mean for my practice as I move forward.

Sheila’s weekly update 79: Stacking and sorting
My life drawing class is now on its summer break. I tend not to take my drawings home and leave them in the studio. Luckily Ewen, the tutor, is very understanding and has a “Sheila shelf”! Today I collected them and there were quite a lot! So over the next week or so I’m going to sort them out, reflect on them through looking at them with fresh eyes and hopefully learn and figure out what and where I want to go next with my drawing. Sometimes to go forward you have to go back for a while.

Sheila’s weekly update 78: Push and pull
Just a short update this week as my great plans for studio time this week didn’t quite work out! Best laid plans and all that. But I did get some studio time at the end of the week, and just made some time to enjoy the process of pushing and pulling paint around a canvas. I feel this landscape study is just prep for something quite different. However I am enjoying the space it is giving me to think.

Sheila’s weekly update 77: The invisible and invisible
As I settle into my new studio space, this week I’m reflecting on a visit to a really thought provoking exhibition called Invisible Women, and a recent visit to the newly refurbished Burrell Collection. So many stories and people remain invisible . . .
