Sheila’s (almost ) weekly update, 22 May
Amateur? professional? what’s the difference. I’ve been thinking about this after reading a little story from Elif Shafak, one of my favourite writers, where she shared how she was once told she would never be more than an “amateur” writer, as she wasn’t dedicating all her time to writing. What a lofty (male) perspective, not understanding how some of us need to do other things to support our practice. Anyway watch to hear more about what it made me think about.

And we’re back
It’s been a while since I did an update. No excuses, I just got out of the habit, which is all too easy. However, this bank holiday I’m back in the studio and back sharing. Life has got in the way a bit over the past couple of months, but I’m hoping to get back into the sharing habit again. Watch to find out more.

A reflective start to the year
It’s Tuesday – time for a wee update. . . been sorting and contemplating on what I might do in 2024 . . Reflecting on 2023 I did quite a lot – a lot more exhibiting that I expected which was great; the PG courses with Contemporary Art Academy which really brought a new focus and understanding to my practice and the SSA mentoring programme, which really helped me focus and build good habits. Both experiences allowed me to connect with some really supportive and talented artists. Now I think I need to take a bit of time in January to take stock and start planning for this year. Hopefully…

Sheila’s weekly update 13 October: Finding your people
People need people is such a true phrase. Over the past few years as I’ve been developing my artists practice, I have slowly been finding my “artist people”. This week I had a lovely day with 2 fabulous artists JC Candanedo and Fiona Stewart. We all met on the CCA professional practice online course, so it was lovely to meet IRL and go and see the piece JC has in the current exhibition at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography then spend a lovely evening together. Watch to find out more.

Sheila’s weekly update 1 October: Last chances and post cards
This week I finally managed to get to the amazing Jupiter Artland to see the Lindsey Mendick Sh*tfaced exhibition. It was everything I’d hoped it would be from reading reviews and listening to Lindsey talking about the show. I’m annoyed I left it to the last minute as I would love to see it again. I also got a lovely box of postcards, one of which could be winging its way to you . . .

Doors Open Festival: Join me for an artist talk 16 September
As part of the Glasgow Doors Open Festival the @saltspace studios are once again open to the public. So this Saturday (16th September, 2- 3pm) I am giving an informal talk about my work, where I find inspiration and some of the processes I use and of course answer any questions about my practice. Would love it if you could come and join me at our Dornoch Street Studios (30 Dornoch St, G40 2QT).

Sheila’s weekly update 2 September: opening times!
This week has been pretty busy in the “other side” of my working life so I haven’t managed to get into the studio. However being able to get to two show openings featured my work has brought some much needed balance to the week. I am delighted to have one of my paintings of the Claypits in the “What do people think of Glasgow” exhibition at the Six Foot Gallery in Glasgow, and to have 2 pieces in The Big Art show, at the Art Department in Paisley. This is a seriously big exhibition with an amazing range of work on show. Luckily it’s on until November so lots of…

Sheila’s weekly update 20 August: A bit of fesitival-ing
I had a wee day out at the Edinburgh Festival this week checking out some of the art on show. The “big one” this year is the Grayson Perry “Smash Hits” at the National Gallery. It’s his first retrospective and it’s big – in every sense of the word. Big tapestries, big use of colour, big ideas. It was also very busy so I must go back and explore it in more detail. However, if you do go – make sure you head downstairs to the Elizabeth Blackadder and John Houston show in the lower galleries. A different scale to the “big show” upstairs, but quietly wonderful. I also spent…
