Sheila’s weekly update 17 Feb 23: Elephants! and not just in the room . . .
How many little things do we just pass by without a second glance? Too many I suspect. I spotted a little elephant on one of my walks – didn’t think too much about it until this week. I took a closer look, so many ways to read its presence in the landscape. Protector? Symbol of wisdom of one passed, a light in the dark? I’m exploring ways to convey some of that in my work. I have been really inspired by the group crit sessions in the personal practice course I’m doing with Contemporary Art Academy this week. It’s really helping me make sense of what I am doing and…

Sheila’s weekly update: 27 January 2023 – thinking not doing . . .
So this week has been another busy one. More in terms of thinking than doing, which isn’t a bad thing. You don’t need to be making things all the time, it’s just as important to spend time thinking, reflecting and researching. I had my first group crit session this week for my course. It was intense, interesting and inspiring all in equal measure. It was great to get to know some of the other artists more and find out more about their processes and inspirations. From the feedback I got I’ve been discovering new (to me ) artists and thinking about what inspires me. Most of my work is 2-D…

Sheila’s weekly update 20 January 2023: Juggling
This week has been all about juggling my art practice with the other side of of my working life. So I felt that I was more behind a screen and not in front of a canvas or work. However I did manage to get some studio time. I made some new eco dye with black scabious flower heads so had a lovely morning printing. I also had my first one to one crit as part of the personal practice course I’m on. It was a really thoughtful and motivating session. Here’s a slightly different, quick round up of the week so far. Actually maybe it was more productive than I…

Sheila’s weekly update 97: Inspiration from seaweed
This week I had a little trip to Cove Park where I had amazing food, company and found out about the research from the food ecologies residencies in Scotland and Sweden. Thinking about seaweed, corn and roses in a very different way now, as well as my local plant ecology.

Sheila’s weekly update 96: Colds, calendars and colour
This week I have had a terrible cold, so I’ve been feeling a bit sorry for myself and I haven’t been in the studio. However I have been doing a few bits and pieces and got some work ready for sale at the winter market at the Briggait in Glasgow. It will be on the Saltspace stand – so if you’re in Glasgow head along to see the work of some wonderful artists and makers. I also spent a bit of time making this year’s How Sheila Sees Advent Calendar. It was actually really useful to looking back at everything I’ve done this year. Watch to find out more and…

Sheila’s weekly update 95: Black Friday – some thoughts
It’s hard to avoid the marketing phenonium that is Black Friday. This week I share a few thoughts (possibly a little rant) about it.
